Magnesium in Major Depression (MD)

Magnesium in Alzheimer’s disease, Dementia & Parkinson’s

Magnesium in Major Depression (MD)

The rise in Major Depression in the world is positively correlated with the rise in Magnesium deficiency. The daily intake of Magnesium has fallen from 500 mg/day to 250 mg/day or less, while the consumption of Calcium has increased dramatically, with focus on Calcium rich and/or Calcium fortified foods and supplements.

Oral administration of Magnesium to animals produced antidepressant-like effects that were comparable to those of antidepressant drugs. Cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) Magnesium has been found to be low in suicidal, Treatment Resistant Depression. The first report of Magnesium treatment for agitated depression was published in 1921 showing success in 220 out of 250 cases. One 2008 randomized clinical trial showed that Magnesium was as effective as the tricyclic antidepressant imipramine in treating Major Depression.

Intravenous and oral Magnesium protocols have been reported to rapidly terminate MD safely and without side effects. Brain Magnesium deficiency reduces serotonin levels, and antidepressant drugs have been shown to have the action of raising brain Magnesium. Excessive calcium, glutamate and aspartate intake can greatly worsen MD.

There is enough empirical evidence to consider Magnesium Supplementation as a useful supportive therapy for the prevention and treatment of Major Depression.

Magnesium in Alzheimer’s disease, Dementia & Parkinson’s

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia. It is characterized by a gradual but progressive decline in cognitive and mental faculties and excessive deposits of Amyloid Protein in the brain. Its real cause is not clearly known but there are several ‘associations’ that are visible to research, and some pointers.

Experimentally it is seen that rats fed a diet deficient in Magnesium, develop severe loss of dopaminergic neurons exclusively in the region of the brain associated with movement and Parkinson’s disease.

Magnesium levels were found decreased in various tissues of AD patients and further decrease was seen in clinical deterioration of patients. A similar low concentration is also seen in patients of PD.

Possible ways that Magnesium can help could be :

  • By affecting Neurotransmitter activity.
  • By affecting synaptic plasticity.
  • By regulating Calcium’s excitatory effect on Neurons.
  • By modulating response of NMDA receptors.
  • By affecting the Stability and Viscosity of the cellular membrane.
  • By acting as a Neuro-protector.

A very important mechanism could be its role in Insulin Metabolism. When there is too much insulin, the IDE (Insulin Degrading Enzyme) could get swamped. IDE is also responsible for degrading the Amyloid Beta Protein. When swamped by Insulin excess, it is unable to degrade the Amyloid beta protein completely, leading to accumulation over time.

This is all a little speculative. However, given that Magnesium Supplementation has no reported side effects, it may be useful to shore up the Magnesium reserves as a potential preventive measure to stave off several Neuro-Psychiatric disorders.

We recommend ChroMag as it contains Chromium with Magnesium, and both can synergistically regulate Insulin Metabolism favorably, in addition to their individual effects.

ChroMag is an excellent combination of nutrients designed to reduce adverse effects of Psychotropic drugs, by reducing their dosage in responsive populations, and creating positive effects through the benefits of adequate Magnesium availability. Chromium adds synergy by regulating glucose metabolism.

ChroMag contains the following nutrients :

  • Magnesium with 72 trace minerals from the pristine oceanic waters off the coasts of Iceland and Ireland.
  • Magnesium Chelated with Glycine for High Absorption.
  • Chromium Picolinate.

Fun Fact: The Brain makes up only 2% of the body weight but uses up to 20% of the body’s energy. Magnesium and Chromium are both Absolutely Critical to carry this energy load as both regulate Glucose Metabolism, the brain’s preferred fuel to meet its high-energy needs.

What is Magnesium?

It is a natural mineral essential to the body’s health. On average, humans have 25 grams of Magnesium in the body. It is now widely recognized as a miracle mineral and is favored by hundreds of devoted doctors all over the world.

Why is it Important?

Magnesium is involved in 700 to 800 body processes, literally everything one can think of. Specifically it affects all aspects of function of the brain. It mimics the action of GABA, calms the brain, soothes nerves, blocks pain, and facilitates the production and action of Neurotrasmitters like Serotonin, GABA and Dopamine. Stress depletes Magnesium.

Magnesium balances its counterpart Calcium to keep the neurons functioning smoothly. If there is excess Calcium it can cause the Neurons to fire uncontrollably, and even “excite them to death”. This can cause a rapid decrease in the no. and quality of neurons in the brain, inviting problems like dementia, Parkinson’s, Epilepsy and Alzheimer’s.

What is Chromium?

It is a trace mineral crucial to the function of Insulin and Glucose metabolism. The brain has high-energy needs and is rich in Mitochondria, which are the powerhouses in the body. Chromium deficiency can lead to poor insulin function and deprive the brain of its preferred fuel glucose. It works in synergy with Magnesium to meet the energy needs of the brain adequately.

What is RE-Mineralization?

The body needs 76 or more minerals for its optimum function. Minerals balance and support each other to carry out body processes at the cellular level. If there is relative excess or shortage of any mineral its can lead to sub-optimal function of the body. When there is excess calcium in neuronal tissue, it can excite the neurons to death, depleting brain capacity and shrinking the brain. Magnesium provides the correct balance.

What is the recommended dosage?

It is recommended to take up to 6 Capsules in divided doses during the day, say 2 capsules thrice a day. In psychiatric states, the Magnesium levels are depleted downward in a vicious cycle, and requires aggressive supplementation.

Is it addictive? Will I have to take it all my life?

It is non-addictive and non-toxic.

Is there any test for magnesium deficiency?

Standard blood test will not be able to give a correct picture. Whereas the body soft tissues and bones may be deficient in Magnesium, the blood level remains more or less constant. The Magnesium RBC test gives better results. Sophisticated tests are required to determine the true level of Magnesium in the body, and such tests are not readily available in India.

Can I give Chromag to my children?

ChroMag has not been recommended for children. If you have any special need, kindly write to us (see query form on website) and we will get back you soon.

Is ChroMag safe during Pregnancy?

ChroMag ingredients are safe for use before, during and after pregnancy.

Are there any contraindications to Magnesium Supplementation?

Magnesium supplementation should be avoided in the following rare cases : Myasthenia Gravis, Kidney Failure, Bowel Obstruction or Heart Block.

Magnesium is generally considered safe except certain rare conditions described below. Kindly consult your health care provider.
